A judgment must be made if a golf ball moves as a player walks past. There is no penalty if the ball moves on its own. There is a one-stroke penalty if the player causes the ball to move.

A golfer may lift a ball that is in a position to help another player. A golfer who disregards this rule is disqualified in a stroke-play tournament and loses the hole in match play.
