The careful management of slack in the fly line system is the key to skillful casting, presentation, fishing the fly, detecting strikes, hook setting and fighting the fish. Unmanaged slack in the fly line and leader can reduce the success rate of the six basic fly fishing procedures.

Steps to build leaders tailored to oneEs casting style and fishing conditions are given. It is suggested that for most freshwater applications it is found easier to cast a leader that is about the length of the rod that is being used.
