The Hawken: Hawken - rifles of the rendezvous
Article Abstract:
The Hawken rifle was developed in the 1830s for use by the mountain men of the West and became known as the Rocky Mountain rifle. Production peaked in 1849 and ended when the fur trade collapsed. A hunting trip with a replica Hawken is described.

A hunter found a doe that had died after being trapped in an icy river. He imagined the animal's unpleasant death and was later unable to shoot a duck as he had intended. He felt empathy for the suffering of animals in harsh weather.
