Skiers can use a 3,700-foot tram on winter Saturdays and ski powder on Mount Howard and the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The Wallowa Lake Tramway was built in 1970 outside Joseph, OR, for a ski resort that never materialized. The tram attracts only a couple dozen skiers annually.

Many people are choosing small ski areas against the huge ski resorts because they are sometimes easier to get to, and more personal. They also cost less, and will sometimes provide free parking or a dip in the hot tub.
