Technology has played an important role in the America's Cup since the schooner 'America,' with a new hull shape and cotton sails, won the first Cup in 1851. US use of technology defeated the challengers in 24 of the next 25 Cups, and it remains an important factor in the 1990s.

The need for lifejackets
Article Abstract:
A recreational boater's rescue of two men from a 32-ft sailboat demonstrated the importance of having lifejackets. The sailboat was completely submerged, but the sailors were wearing their lifejackets. The Coast Guard did not arrive for 18 more minutes.
