The wingshot: for every young hunter there's a moment that marks the passage from child to adult

Article Abstract:

A hunter describes the first time he shot a flying grouse. As a boy in the company of more experienced hunters, he was urged to shoot a grouse that was walking on the ground, but he stepped in front of the dog so that the grouse would fly and then shot it as the men would, while it was in flight.

Some of the best of 'Tap's Tips,' from Field and Stream magazine are presented. The outdoor and sporting tip essays were unique in that they were all fifty words or less. Tips involve subjects such as building a fire, creating a trout lure from a pipe cleaner, and pulling duck decoys.

Fear of midges

Article Abstract:

Many fly fishermen will not use midge imitations as flies because they are so difficult to see. These lures are worth the extra trouble, however, because trout will bite at them. Tips on successfully using midge flies are detailed.
