Those maddening, meandering elk

Elk seem to be always on the move, wandering from area to area without any obvious pattern and to the frustration of many elk hunters. However, tracking studies are indicating that elk do most of their moving between four and eight AM, making early morning the best hunting time.

Wapiti elk tend to climb to high elevations only after the hunting season puts pressure on them. Hunters who start at the season's beginning are likely to find elk they can surprise at lower elevations. One Montana elk hunting trip is described.

Tougher country, easier elk
Article Abstract:
Elk adapt to the hunting season by seeking cover in heavily hunted areas or moving to areas less frequently hunted. Elk hunters have better chances in areas away from heavily used roads where the elk feel secure.
