Travels with Jean-Claude

Article Abstract:

The misadventures of filming a 1969 sports documentary featuring gold medal-winning French skier Jean-Claude Killy are recounted. The filmmakers and skiers encountered many trying conditions and unexpected circumstances in New Zealand, where they hoped to film Killy and his teammate Leo Lacroix skiing on Mount Cook. The helicopter flight back from the mountain proved to be the most harrowing event of their lives.

A movie director shares his experience when he went skiing into the cold thin air of the Alps. He describes the massive ice of the glacier leaning together, forming a true Cathedral of the Gods with slanting ice walls 40 or 50 feet high and undercut along their base by the river.
