Trench warfare: skiers and snowboarders battled one another in the world's first free-carving contest at Sugarbush, Vermont, last April

Trench Warfare is a new type of ski competition that allows snowboarders and those on skis to go head-to-head testing their short-radius carving abilities. The first Trench Warfare event was held on Apr 6, 1996, with 43 participants. Doug Lewis won the event.

One way to ski in slushy spring snow is to flex the ankles and knees while turning. Other techniques include using a wedge position when turning and pulling the feet up to unweight them.
