Vagal and cardiac reactivity to psychological stressors in trained and untrained men

Article Abstract:

Cardiac and vagal reactivity to psychological stressors have been studied in 10 trained and 10 untrained men of college age. The study was to find whether higher aerobic fitness is associated with greater vagal influences on the myocardium. This resulted in moderation of chronotropic cardiac activity during psychological stress and recovery. The hypothesis that among young men higher aerobic fitness is associated with longer heart period (HP) at rest and during psychological stress and recovery was supported by findings. The lower cardiac chronotropic activation seen in the aerobically trained relative to the untrained men was not paralleled by a group difference in the amplitude of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). The group difference in HP was not mediated directly by vagal mechanisms seen in RSA amplitude.

Nonexercise models for estimating VO(sub 2max) with waist girth, percent fat or BMI

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the use of waist girth (WG) as a body composition surrogate in the nonexercise models and to compare the accuracy of nonexercise models that include WG, %fat, or body mass index (BMI). Results showed that model with WG estimated VO(sub 2max) with no appreciable difference in accuracy compared with models using either %fat or BMI, supporting use of WG as a surrogate for body composition in nonexercise models.
