The big push for push technology
Article Abstract:
The increased demand for popular Internet material is fueling the development of "push" technology for Internet content transmission. The technology entails the broadcast of data instead of the conventional Internet practice of downloading the information via land-based telephone lines. Two methods of delivery that have emerged include narrowband, where data is transmitted to users at 1 megabit per second using wireless and other land-based means, and broadband, capable of 32 megabits per second using satellites.

The case for compatibility
Article Abstract:
Interchangeable equipment are the means by which satellite direct broadcasters will be able to remain competitive in the industry in the long run. Interoperable equipment will require the adoption of similar standards for such technologies as digital compression and transmission. The adoption of the MPEG-2 by such standard organizations as the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), composed of over 170 groups from 21 countries, and the Digital Audio-Visual Council is a significant step towards this goal.

Open technology for digital broadcasting
Article Abstract:
Broadcasters embracing the latest digital equipment can only benefit from the development of standards. While the new programming formats worry broadcasters about the needed financial investment, digital equipment operating on open formats will give broadcasters the flexibility to select the best products from suppliers. Similar to the evolution of the personal computer industry, the adoption of standards will create competition among suppliers, resulting in lower prices and better products.
