Belt use rates among taxicab drivers in a jurisdiction with license point s for nonuse
Article Abstract:
The effects of District of Columbia's (DC) primary seat belt law, which took effect on Oct 1997, among taxicab drivers who could be adversely affected by such law are analyzed. Under the law, drivers not in compliance are assessed a $50.00 fine and two penalty points on their driving records. The effects of the law on drivers were assessed by comparing belt use rate in DC with those in neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia where cab drivers are not required to use seat belts. The results and their implications for future research are discussed.

Parents' views of driver licensing practices in the United States
Article Abstract:
A majority of parents of 17-year-olds are in favour of a graduated licensing practice involving restrictions on night driving for beginners, the number of teenagers in the car and consumption of alcoholic drinks. An analysis of surveys conducted on 1,000 parents in the US shows that 81% opine that their children are ready for licenses and 25% are dissatisfied with manner of handling of the existing requirements. More than 50% of the parents support the licensing practices in their states and 41% opine that awarding licenses requires stricter laws.

Current requirements for getting a drivers license in the United States
Article Abstract:
The drivers licensure procedure in the US has variations between states in prelicensure requirements such as learner's permit and driver education. Most states aim to simplify progress and procedures through the learning phase. However, with the institution of early and decontrolled licensure, the laws governing the prelicense period have assumed added significance. A graduated licensing system requires adequate driving experience under expert guidance as a pre-condition to licensure.
