Stork-Wartsila Diesel (SWD) has launched its latest medium speed engine design which reduces NOx emissions by 50-70% but does not affect fuel consumption. The company has reduced the overal dimensions of the SW38, but claims that it can still compete with low speed engines. The design of the cylinder liner and piston was the result of collaboration between SWD and the rest of the Wartsila Diesel Group.

Winterthur, Switzerland-based New Sulzer Diesel announced during the inauguration of its new test center that it it is developing a new medium-speed propulsion engine named the ZA50S, which features hydraulic actuation of the cylinder-head valves. The company's ZA40S engine currently enjoys widespread use on passenger ships and ferries.
