Article Abstract:

The 1987 Herald of Free Enterprise catastrophe and other maritime accidents that triggered a series of actions and regulations from the International Maritime Organization with respect to maritime safety are discussed. Controlling human error involved in causalities, managing risks in ship operations, issue of various safety standards are some of the measures.

Article Abstract:

The rescue of more than 150 people in frigid waters after the cruise ship Explorer sank in the Antarctic has reignited the debate over open or closed lifeboats. The number of open lifeboats is gradually being phased-out but accidents like the Explorer's has increased the calls for a faster phase-out.
