Electronic aids should simplify crews' tasks
Article Abstract:
Participants to the Motor Ship's 15th Marine Propulsion Conference held in Mar 1993 expressed concern over the possible introduction of 'intelligent systems' to engine monitoring. Intelligent systems are slowly taking over most ship operations traditionally handled by human operators such as radio communications and ship positioning. Critics warned that many ship owners are becoming overly dependent on intelligent systems, which are not completely fail-safe. However, engine builders noted that such systems will be incorporated into engine monitoring operations only to simplify ship crews' jobs and not to ultimately replace human operators.

Waiting for IMO? no chance: the lack of clear standards has not prevented shipowners from exploiting the advantages of ecdis systems but is also leading to continued confusion
Article Abstract:
Electronic charting systems are being used on board vessels although the IMO/IHO standards for electronic chart display and information systems (ecdis) have not yet been agreed. Suppliers are concerned that the IMO/IHO standards may be left behind if the different ecdis systems available become widely adopted, and may cause incompatible industry standards. There are both European and North American systems, and now Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from Japan, is launching the Super ASOS integrated bridge system with ecdis style display.
