Bigger and faster vessels are being developed to meet the growing demand for high-speed ships. Fincentieri has its MDV series made of high tensile steel with aluminum superstructure and a service speed of 40 knots. They are 145 m. long and 22 m. wide. Buquebus is using gas turbines with its B60 ferry that will boast of a service speed of 60 knots. Bazan has its Mestral and Alhambra line of mono-hull designs, while FBM Marine has a 70 m. aluminum mono-hull with a service speed of 30-35 knots. Stena is poised to build four HSS 700 to extend its HSS series.

When E means elephant

The E3 tanker was jointly designed by five of Europe's leading shipbuilders in an effort to revive the industry's very-large-cargo-carrier and ultra-large-cargo-carrier sectors. However, only one of these shipyards, Spain's Astilleros Espanoles, decided to actively promote the design. It has already completed the construction of its first E3 tanker for Spanish shipowner Navierra Tapias, but the latter insists on delaying delivery until minor flaws are corrected.

The growing global concern over the environment has placed the safety and suitability of HFO-based commercial ship fuels in question. Authorities claim that HFO-based fuels are of poor quality and are prone to overboard spills during bunkering operations in port. They also emit harmful pollutants during combustion. However, shipowners are reluctant to shift to other types of fuels because of the low cost of HFO-based fuels.
