Government takes pressure off owners
Article Abstract:
Norway's reformed tax laws promise to increase the competitiveness of its shipping industry. Under the current taxation system for its maritime industries, shipping firms have to pay 25% tax on future profits. Since international shipping operates tax-free on a company basis, Norwegian shipping companies suffer from an enormous cost disadvantage. Shipping companies welcome the revised tax system, which makes tax levels approximately equal to those of the Netherlands. The Norwegian fleet is placed at 1,393 vessels, representing a little over 47 million deadweight.

Danes cut crew costs
Article Abstract:
The strength of the Danish krona has prompted the country's maritime carriers to reconsider their longstanding policy of crewing their ships exclusively with all-Danish officers. Realizing that they suffered a disadvantage as against competitors who work in US dollars, Danish shipping firms such as the Lauritzen Group and A.P. Moller have announced that only senior positions will now be reserved for Danes.
