Article Abstract:

The IMO's NOx code states that an Approved Technical File must be carried on board listing all NOx critical parts and settings to allow later compliance checking. To ease checking, marine engine manufacturers are producing some parts with serial numbers that are contained in the Technical File. This could effectively sideline parts and services from independent suppliers.

Fuel price fears

Article Abstract:

The concerns by ship owners over the escalating prices of crude oil since 1988 are discussed. The costs of different types and grades of oil are examined and the implications of adding used lub oil to HFO bunkers are assessed.

The suitability and efficiency of gas turbines as a method of powering merchant ships are discussed. The advantages of twin-shaft simple cycle systems are weighed against poor fuel consumption considerations.
