Kobe yards damaged
Article Abstract:
The Jan. 17, 1995 earthquake which hit Kobe, Japan, damaged the region's largest shipyards operated by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. Although the damage to the shipyards was not severe, the two companies found it difficult to completely reopen the facilities because of the lack of adequate insurance coverage. To compensate for the shutdown of its facility, KHI has reactivated a closed dock in Kobe, Japan.

Ship yards look to amendments
Article Abstract:
Shipyards such as Newport News are critical of the proposed changes to the OECD agreement that would abolish shipbuilding subsidies because such, in effect, discourages new US shipbuilders from becoming competitive in the world market. They believe that the amendments should not be immediately implemented but should be gradual in character. Repair yards, on the other hand, such as Norshipco are not as opposed to the proposed regulation changes.

Berths, more berths
Article Abstract:
Industry executives have varying opinions on the future prospects of cruise ship newbuildings. Some believe that a temporary decline will be seen in view of the large number of vessels currently being built on order. On the other hand, many cruise line and shipyard executives also believe that newbuildings will continue to increase in view of the tremendous potential for growth of the cruise business.
