Pacific coast yards court foreign owners

Article Abstract:

Shipyards on the Pacific Coast are beginning to focus their efforts towards the international market. Many companies have begun to modify their repair facilities to accomodate the increasing number of foreign contracts. Shiprepair companies on the Pacific Coast are optimistic that more foreign vessels would prefer their services to that of their Asian counterparts despite the substantially higher labor cost. The military's efforts to reduce its shipbuilding contracts have also prompted some companies to accept more commercial work.

US yards count commercial costs

Article Abstract:

Delayed delivery due to lack of shipbuilding skills is the major block to United States shipyards' reentry into the international and commercial market. The experience by Newport News on its Double Eagle deals portrays the ordeal that other shipyards are encountering in their current endeavor. The delays signify losses not only on the part of shipbuilders but also on the part of government since most of the deals are financed by loan guarantees.
