Raven depends on extra wings

Article Abstract:

Mobil has added another vessel to its 33-tanker fleet, which includes 10 very large cargo carriers (VLCC). The Raven is a conventional VLCC with an additional hull. It has a special drain running from the deck into the slop tanks, which was designed to overcome the IG pressure within the tank and allow gravity drainage of any oil on deck into the tank. A DU-Sulzer 7RTA84M handles propulsion, while the main engine has two IHI-BBC VTR564A turbochargers and two auxiliary blowers. The addition of the Raven to Mobil's large tanker fleet underscores its aim of operating its own rather than rely on independent operators.

Oil majors place a premium on safety

Article Abstract:

DetNorske Veritas VP Wilhelm Magelsen described the most suitable tanker design that is environment-friendly and could prevent oil spills. The design features dual redundant propulsion and steering coupled with an emergency propulsion system that can maintain a 6-knot speed even in severe weather conditions. Other features include an integrated navigation system that has an integrated brdge, electronic chart display and information systems. The use of redundant propulsion and steering gear is believed to lessen the risk of accidents, as well the possibility of machinery failure that may result to oil spills.

Heidrun tankers on line

Article Abstract:

The operators of the Heidrun field in the North Sea have taken delivery of three shuttle tankers earlier ordered for the facility. The vessels, one built by Samsung and the other two by Astilleros Espanoles, are the largest of their kind to use diesel-electric propulsion systems. Another distinguishing feature of the shuttle tankers is their high thruster capacities, a capability necessary for position keeping in the North Sea's severe weather conditions.
