Safety and cost-effectiveness of clearzones in rockcuts
Article Abstract:
Different clearzone alternatives in rockcuts were examined to determine the most effective clearzone width through rockcuts. Clearzones are unobstructed spaces designed to provide an area where an errant vehicle can stop or the driver can safely regain control of the vehicle. A method for choosing the appropriate clearzone in a rockcut based on the site and traffic conditions expected at the site is described. It provides the best balance between the cost of construction and improvements in safety resulting from a wider clearzone in the rockcut.

The economic evaluation of an ergonomic investment for preventive purposes: a case study
Article Abstract:
The desirability of a preventive ergonomic health and safety investment project is more likely to grow when the long term effects are taken into account and deeper cost analyses are made, according to a case study. It is easier to justify investments in corrective health and safety measures which are intended to solve costly ergonomic problems than it is to justify preventive investments where the health and safety performance of a company is already good. A preventive investment should be evaluated on a rational basis.
