Safety of tank gauges sparks off debate
Article Abstract:
Saab Marine Electronics AB criticized classification societies for approving the use of flame-proof radar level gauges on the tanker deckers. The company believes that such equipment are unreliable and more difficult to repair than instrinsically-safe radar level gauges. Lloyd's Register defended the approval of the system by stating that tanker owners can choose for themselves which system to use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas. It is only in Zone 0 that classification societies encourage the use of intrinsically-safe radar levels.

Turning off the gas
Article Abstract:
Kvaerner Maritime has created a recondensation system that recaptures boil-off gas in LNG carriers. The machinery is cost effective as it reliquifies the boil-off gas and transports it back to the cargo tanks. LNG carriers may be more open to adopting diesel electric propulsion plants with the arrival of the recondensation system. Kvaerner Maritime vice president, Kare Rygg, said the system will enable vessels to deliver an increased payload which will produce additional revenue.
