Surveillance eases on board workload
Article Abstract:
Several companies have introduced advanced engine monitoring systems to enable shipowners and operators to assess their engine's operational condition. These systems, which include Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.'s diesel engine monitoring system and Digitec Corp.'s Dieseltune III, provide operators with important engine data such as combustion pressure and engine speed. These data are then used by ship engineers to identify problems with various engine parts, including valves, nozzles and turbochargers.

Research anticipates emission controls
Article Abstract:
Several shipping and marine engine groups led by the International Maritime Organization have concluded a five-year study to determine the extent of exhaust gas emissions from marine engines. The results of the study helped identify key problems that contribute to increased marine engine gas emissions. The results also assisted marine engine builders design more environment-friendly fuel combustion technologies such as selective catalytic reduction.

Cleaning up low-speed engine emissions
Article Abstract:
Low-speed marine engine manufacturers discussed different strategies to reduce the exhaust-emission levels of their products and meet International Maritime Organization standards during the 17th Annual Marine Propulsion Conference held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Among the measures presented during the event were the use of selective catalytic converters, engine power optimization and water emulsification.
