Surviving in a tough climate
Article Abstract:
A few South American shipbuilders are posting healthy performance as the rest of the industry faces difficulties in conducting business since the negative impact of interest rates in early to mid-1990s. Brazilian ship firm, Grupo Libra, is expected to receive a loan of $341 million from the national bank for ship construction. Rio de Janerio-based Estaleiro Ilha is posting good business performance, with a contract with MPC Capital to construct two 69,000 dwt bulk carriers.

Finland favours free market
Article Abstract:
Finland's shipbuilding industry has been as financially healthy as ever despite the appreciation of its currency, the markka, leading to higher prices for its products. The country's competitive edge is carried on by its many shipyards among which are Kvaerner Masa-Yards, Finnyards and Kotka Shipyard Inc. The number of orders and contracts from foreign clients have generally increased from 1993-1994.
