The pollution quagmire
Article Abstract:
The level of pollution in the world's oceans continues to increase despite the imposition of increasingly stringent regulations and the adoption of new environment-friendly technologies. Shipboard garbage remains a serious problem, although the biggest challenge by far concerns the proper disposal of petroleum products, whether cargo residues or discharged ballast water. The problem is exacerbated by many oil-exporting countries which refuse to provide reception facilities for oily wastes.
