An examination of process and outcome differences in health and safety inspections conducted by state and federal agencies
Article Abstract:
The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 enables individual states to tailor their occupational safety and health programs to specific needs. It is suggested that state programs are more lenient than the federal program. A study compared 4,755 state inspections with 4,590 federal inspections, and found that state programs have closer links with the industries they regulate than federal programs. The merits of the state programs compared to the federal programs are discussed.
