Turbo troubles
Article Abstract:
A report released by The Swedish Club and DNV revealed that turbo-charger problems make up the greatest source of liability in the engine room. Specifically, the Club's report claim that 33% of machinery claims come from faulty turbo-chargers while the DNV report that 25% of low-speed engine damage was attributed to turbo-chargers. Two causes of turbo-charger problems are creep and turbo-charger bearing failures. Creep refers to the ageing of alloy steels that lead to reduced tensile strength of a material.

Low-speed launches
Article Abstract:
Wartsila NSD of Switzerland has introduced its Sulzer RT-flex low-speed engine that is touted to have the largest common rail fuel injection system in the world. The Sulzer RT-flex's exhaust valve and fuel injection actuation are electronically timed, negating the need for a camshaft. MAN B and W has unveiled three low-speed engines that features its 19 bar BMEP cylinder technology for improved output. These include the L90MC-C, the S80MC-C and the S90MC-C.
