All playing together

Article Abstract:

Delegates at the Play 99 conference in Sheffield, England, placed strong emphasis on the need to ensure that those involved with children's play present themselves as a strong, unified group to the UK government, which at present seems to pay little attention to this issue. Speakers highlighted how play can be part of government policy in a broad social context, tackling problems such as social exclusion and juvenile crime. Attention was also given to the issue of safety standards in play.

Play rooms

Article Abstract:

There seems to be a growing trend towards directing children towards indoor play, which may reflect the need adults feel to take greater control over children's activities. Children are becoming increasingly distanced from the outdoor environment as fears about molestation, abduction and drugs abuse grow. If this trend continues, then adults will have to take much greater responsibility for creating appropriate play environments.

Scottish unitary authorities ordered to take action on play

Article Abstract:

It is vital to establish improved communication between providers of children's play facilities in Scotland, according to 'A Play Strategy for Scotland,' a document published recently by organisations including the Scottish Play Council and the National Centre of Play. This document calls on the voluntary sector to cooperate with the new Scottish unitary authorities to establish a single approach to activities and standards.
