Iberia's improvizers

Article Abstract:

Portugal's failure to take advantage of commercial opportunities abroad, such as the opportunities in the reconstruction of Kuwait, is blamed on the people's collective inability to plan for the long term. Many Portuguese business practices, including the hiring of an employee on the strength of a friend's recommendation, are often at odds with the demands of a modern economy. Although Portugal is materially progressive and has one of the strongest growth rates in the European Community, the nation's general dislike for careful planning is clearly hindering its rise to international greatness.

The Meese Show

Article Abstract:

The Senate Judiciary Committee's hearings on the confirmation of Edwin Meese's appointment as attorney general are a superb example of Washington theatrics. The committee is composed of leading liberals and conservatives. Meese's support of civil rights is being challenged. His position as chief of staff during Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign may impair his ability to perform as an objective and fair attorney general. Some past financial dealings are under investigation. Despite the controversy, Meese's appointment is likely to be confirmed.
