A survey The Changing Face of Leisure commissioned by International Leisure Industry Week (LIW) found that most leisure organisations are optimistic about their business performance. Many organisations cited increased competition from the industry and from others as an important issue affecting their businesses. Most expected to increase their investment during the next five years and many felt that the oldeer market would bring opportunities.

Cost cutters: energy efficiency programmes can create huge savings for leisure centres and benefit the environment

Article Abstract:

Energy management is often ignored but can create major savings for leisure centres. Energy expenditure can represent 30% of a sports centre's operating costs, although easily implemented changes such as replacing tungsten lighting with compact fluorescent tubes could result in a 40-70% energy saving. Properly fitted pool covers can reduce heat loss allowing heating and ventilation systems to be turned off overnight.

The UK leisure industry was given a massive boost in 1994 when money from the National Lottery was directed towards projects designed to help promote fitness, health, enjoyment and leisure.
