Australia's tourist industry is forecast to grow by 3.1% from 1997 to the year 2001, with the number of visitors expected to increase to 4.9 million, while forecasts for the year 2007 predict visitor numbers of 7.6 million visits per year. The domestic travel market is forecast to increase to 54.8 million tourist nights by the year 2001 from 50.1 million tourist nights in 1995. The importance of the travel industry to the Australian economy is vital, with up to 93% of Australians backing moves to invest and support the industry.

International tourist arrivals reached 657 million in 1999, according to World Tourism Organization forecasts. The most significant expansion was seen in the Asia Pacific region, where tourist arrivals from the rest of the world rose 7.5%.
