Bali claws back from catastrophe
Article Abstract:
Bali's troubled tourism industry is fighting to regain market share. Hotel occupancy rates have been around 40% during 1998 and arrivals in Bali look set to be down 20% on 1997 figures. The Indonesian government has been unable to maintain overseas tourist offices so members of the tourist industry in Bali have formed Bali Promo, a new promotional body of their own. The group hosts trade educational visits, sends a regular newsletter to media and travel industry operatives, and is aiming to develop its own brochure and trade show representation.

Trade fights back from 'own goal.'(Hungarian tourist industry, includes travel facts and related article about Budapest)
Article Abstract:
Hungary initiated the demise of the Eastern Bloc by allowing East Germans to cross the border into Austria in 1989. This damaged the Hungarian tourist industry because people chose to visit other European cities rather than stay in Hungary. However, tourism in Hungary has recovered, with four million German tourists visiting in 1996. There are now 16 foreign tourist offices in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and holidays focusing on cultural events, cruises on the Danube, sporting holidays, festivals and thermal spas are being promoted.

Lack of promotion holds back Hungary
Article Abstract:
Many Belgin travel operators believe the market to Hungary is stable with a few saying the market is growing. However Budapest is not one of the top 10 cities for trips and there is concern that the city and Hungary do not do enough to encourage tourism. Prices are high, particularly for car hire, and driving in Hungary is not easy. Many travel agencies do not buy self-catering and hotel programmes, preferring to purchase direct.
