Cyprus
Article Abstract:
The number of visitors to Cyprus stagnated at about 2 million visitors per year during 1994-1996, despite the increased availability of accommodation to 84,000 beds from 49,000 beds in 1989. The lack of growth is partly attributed to economic recession and the impact of the Gulf war. The length of stay of foreign visitors has fallen to about 11 nights per stay, due to the comparatively high cost of packaged holidays in Cyprus. Domestic tourism has grown in the 1990s, with foreign tourist numbers likely to increase if a peace settlement can be reached on Cyprus between Turkey and Greece.

Guatemala
Article Abstract:
Guatemala aims to promote its tourist markets by encouraging tourist arrivals in low seasons and offering improved value for money. Promotions are being organized by an independent group of top tour operators and hotels, with conventions and congresses particularly promoted. The country's tourist industry image would improve if hotel quality improved. The number of tourist accommodation rooms increased to 13,113 in 1996 from 12,033 in 1995, with 4,687 having no star rating in 1996.
