Article Abstract:

There were 2.2 million visitors to the Dominican Republic in 1997, from only 63,025 in 1970. The island's tourist industry grew particularly rapidly in the early 1990s. Those involved in tourism are beginning to increasingly appreciate the fact that the Dominican Republic has a diverse geography, allowing tourists to be offered alternatives to sun, sea and sand. Tourism is currently concentrated around coastal towns. It has rapidly become a key element of the Dominican Republic's economy, with tourism earnings for 1997 estimated at more than $2 billion.

Article Abstract:

Canada was a top tourism destination during the 1970s and 1980s, but the travel business was badly affected by the recession. However travel remains a significant part of the economy and international tourism was ranked fourth amongst the country's export industries in 1990. Canada has a modern transport network and a good tourism infrastructure.

India is seeing a boom in its tourism industry helped by economic liberalisation, political stability and industrial recover. However it has only a 0.36% share of the world tourism market and the government is launching initiatives aimed at increased tourism, such as the opening up of the country's skies to private airlines.
