Encircling the square

Article Abstract:

Local planning authorities are insisting that the design of leisure complexes in urban areas incorporate existing buildings sympathetically. Developers are often against this idea as the buildings are usually not in keeping with the desired finish of the complex and alterations may be limited due to the listed status of many inner city buildings. The lack of key sites within city areas means that developers have no choice but to change their original plans or not build. Designers of leisure complexes will have to comply with authorities or build out of town.

Mapping the future

Article Abstract:

The UK Sports Council has introduced a new system to advise developers where new sports facilities should be built. Maps have been provided on a regional basis showing the ares of most need, while pointing out existing complexes. The Sports Council also calls for an increased level of public consultation about sports facility location. It is hoped the new system will introduce an element of proactivity into the planning application stage of sports complex construction.
