Article Abstract:

Training is low on the agenda of most firms involved with tourism, due to a high turnover of low-skilled staff. The UK government is launching an initiative called New Deal, which will pay 60 pounds sterling towards the wages of trainees and 750 pounds sterling per person for training programmes. The government believes the resulting well-trained and motivated workforce will be worth the investment of 3 million pounds sterling. Staff integration and motivation are a major problem in an industry where wages are traditionally very low.

Article Abstract:

The failure of British people to learn foreign languages is beginning to have repercussions in many businesses especially those allied to the tourist trade. A tourist industry conference in October 1996 noted that visitors from abroad frequently returned to establishments that had tried to communicate in their own language. Many large companies now see the attainment of some language skills by their employees as a vital part of business planning.
