Article Abstract:

The Newseum in Arlington, VA, is funded by the Freedom Forum. It focuses on the past, present and future of news, and aims to encourage free speech and free press. It has a wide range of attractions, including the Interactive Newsroom, where there are touch screen terminals allowing visitors to place themselves on the cover of a national magazine, and exhibits detailing the very beginnings of printing. Special exhibitions in 1999 will include African-American Newspeople and Fly Me To The Moon: 500 Years of Fiction and Fact.

CCT: the story so far

Article Abstract:

The Public Services Privatisation Research Unit (PSPRU) studied 141 recreation management contracts to appraise employment conditions. Local authorities gained most contracts as few private companies tendered. However, in aiming for competitiveness wages were cut and working conditions declined. Employment conditions were worse in the private sector and one third of the contracts gained were discontinued due to financial failure.

Issues are presented concerning the action which was taken to update the library service offered by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the late 1990s. The public consultation exercise undertaken by the council is discussed.
