Is another Estonia disaster simply waiting to happen?

Article Abstract:

Eastern-Mediterranean ferries are ill-equiped to deal with an emergency because they are badly run and maintained, according to a study conducted by the German automobile club ADAC. Many safety regulations had not been implemented on ferries, which also included those operating in northern European waters. The survey found badly maintained lifejackets, bulkhead which had not been closed properly and fires doors which were rusty. The International Maritime Organisation is responsible for safety regulations of ferries and ships.

Groups help to tackle technology

Article Abstract:

The service that the travel agent provides is likely to change as the Internet is used more widely within the travel industry. All Flight and holiday information will be found on the Internet, and while the customer may eventually be able to book services online, the travel agent will still be required to search for information, solve problems and offer advice. Networks such as the Belgian Travel Net computer network are currently being set up, and will be used by Belgian tour operators and travel agents.

Stena Line muscling in on Channel routes

Article Abstract:

Price competition between operators of cross-Channel ferry services will become even stronger as Stena Line launches the 'Stena Sea Lynx II' catamaran-style ferry in Feb 1996. This will reduce the crossing time on the Dover-Calais route to 45 minutes. It will also use the 28,727 tonne 'Stena Jutlandica' in the Channel from Jul 1996. This can carry 2,300 passengers, and will be the largest ship ever to operate on the Dover-Calais route.
