Playing it by heart

Article Abstract:

Programs that promote healthy dining help restaurants provide options that attract health-conscious consumers. One such program is Eat Smart!, which was jointly created in 1998 by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Toronto Public Health Dept. To become member of the program, restaurants are required to meet criteria in the areas of nutrition, food safety and smoking. Eat Smart! gave its first certificates in 1999 to about 200 restaurants in Toronto that complied with the criteria.
