Rooms added as hotels push for an end to VAT
Article Abstract:
Many of Cyprus's hotels are facing financial difficulties, and hoteliers are now calling on the government to lift VAT in order to help them. The 3% Cyprus Tourism Organisation tax has already been abolished, but hotels are seeking further assistance, including new deals with trade unions which will allow them to reduce staff costs. Despite these problems, the industry continues to expand, with around 1,500 beds having been added since summer 1994.

Although the French continue to travel to the French Caribbean, market share is being lost to Cuba and the Dominican Republic, according to product manager of Passions Exotiques, Alain Bataille.
