Article Abstract:

Unions are unquestionably directing their efforts on organizing the foodservice and hospitality industries in Canada. The Canadian Auto Workers union has published one document over the Internet that notes that the Canadian hospitality industry is a vibrant sector with the potential to contribute to the national economy. The document further states that this industry, however, is plagued with factors such as low wages, high turnover and poor working conditions.

As good as gold

Article Abstract:

Total sales of Canada's top 100 foodservice and hospitality companies in in 1999 reached C$24.0 billion, an increase of C$2.5 billion from C$21.5 billion in 1998. Sales for the entire industry in 1999 throughout the country were C$36.2 billion, according to the statistics from the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservice Assn. This means that the top 100 firms accounted for 66.3% of the total industry sales in 1999, which an increase of 62% from 1998.

Harvesting goodwill

Article Abstract:

Second Harvest is a Toronto-based perishable food rescue program that delivers perishable food to soup kitchens, breakfast programs, drop-in programs and social welfare groups and agencies that deal with homeless and hungry communities. Food for the program comes from grocery stores, hospitals, hotels, social caterers, restaurants and other commercial and non-commercial food service companies.
