Winning - not taking part - matters

Article Abstract:

The poor showing of English teams on the world's sports stage has opened the way for 60 million pounds sterling worth of investment by lottery funding to raise competitiveness in sport amongst school children. Up to 600 sports organizers will be appointed in UK schools to co-ordinate sports activities and develop greater competition with other schools. The government is keen to stress the new initiative will not prevent children opting out of specific sports if they prefer to take part in other activities.

Leisure development has been uneven due to local government organisation and the outdoor culture. However, local councils are recognising the potential of indoor facilities.
