Youth sport gets a strategy

Article Abstract:

Many new ideas are contained in the UK government's new 'Sport: Raising the Game' document. However, there is concern that very little real support is being offered for sports development. The role of the commercial sector appears to be limited to sponsoring sports development programmes, and the document gives no information about the role of local authorities. It focuses instead on youth and excellence, looking at ways to improve sport provision in schools.

Are we too busy for leisure?

Article Abstract:

Many people in the UK now work very long hours, and thus have little time for leisure activities, according to a Mintel report. Leisure operators will have to respond by making their facilities available round-the-clock. This trend is also being reinforced by the growth in the number of contract and part-time workers. Lengthy working hours are starting to have a very negative impact on the quality of life of many people.

National lottery wins support

Article Abstract:

Replies to a questionnaire in UK periodical, 'Leisure Opportunities' January, 1992 have revealed support for the establishment of a UK national lottery. Twenty respondents included administrators, managers, student and researcher. None considered a lottery would encourage gambling. All felt it provided an opportunity to improve sports resourcing. However, 60% considered it might lead to a cut in government funding.
