A personal narrative is presented of the area around the reactors of Chernobyl, in the Ukraine, where a nuclear power station exploded in 1986. Scientists state that the full effects of the explosion will not be seen for decades, since some cancers take a long time to develop.

An overview is presented of the Oily Rocks oil rig, located on the Western shore of Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan. Built in 1940 and once the major success of the Azerbaijan oil industry, it is the biggest and oldest oil platform in the world, but is on the edge of ruin in 2001.
