Awakening Nuiqsut

Article Abstract:

A history and description of the village of Nuiqsut, on Alaska's North Slope, is presented. Only resettled in 1973 after a period of abandonment the village is undergoing rapid change with the arrival of major activity in the surrounding Alpine oilfield.

An Arco epitaph

Article Abstract:

A history of ARCO's oil operations in Alaska and its sale to Phillips Petroleum in 1998 is presented. The company was the first to find oil there in 1957 and then discovered the large deposits in Prudhoe Bay in 1968.

The sinking of the Galaxy

Article Abstract:

A description of the accident that sank the Galaxy, a 180-foot long cod fishing boat, in the Bering Sea. The ship went down after an explosion in the Galaxy's engine room forced the crew to abandon ship.
