Charge cards sneak new fees past travelers

Banks that issue MasterCard and Visa credit cards are beginning to increase their surcharges on overseas purchases. Travelers still benefit from currency conversion rates through credit cards, which are 2% to 3% contrasted with cash conversion rates of 5% to 10%. The largest issuers of cards, Citigroup and Bank One, will impact 478 million cardholders. American Express and Diners Club are keeping their currency conversion fees at 1%.

Charge cards cut collision benefits

Chase Manhattan Bank and American Express may lead the way for most major credit cards to revoke or change their rental automobile coverage service provided to card holders. Reasons cited include high costs to card companies and reluctance of overseas rental agencies to accept credit card coverage.
