The Jan 1997 Conference on Aviation Safety and Security brought together the heads of major US airlines with government and industry leaders. Topics discussed included safety ratings for individual airlines, forecasts of crash rates, causes of crashes, new fire suppression materials, and costs.

Many airlines suspect that electronic devices such as laptop computers and CD players cause navigation equipment to faulter, even though no evidence for this exists. Passengers are often banned from using these devices during takeoff and landing.
