High-performance reading machines
Article Abstract:
The architecture of a reading machine that is designed to achieve high speed in performing an interpretation of text and a high rate of correct interpretation of text is described. Reading machines map an image containing text into a meaningful symbolic representation. Such machines' subtasks include the extraction of textual regions of interest, the recognition of symbols and the interpretation of the symbols via contextual knowledge. The architecture of a reading machine that finds and interprets addresses on a stream of postal letters, where the addresses are either machine-printed or handwritten, is examined. A high-performance reading machine requires multiple algorithms for recognition, multiple scales, the efficacy of artificial neural networks and fuzzy matching, techniques for combining results of multiple algorithms and the ability to read unconstrained handwritten words.
