Michael Segal, the insurance titan, lived in one of the most spectacular estates on the North Shore, a Lake Michigan property rich in architectural and historical associations. Segal had to give up his property when he was convicted for looting millions of dollars from a trust fund maintained by his company, Near North Insurance Brokerage, and in 2005 preservationists and the federal government are having a face off over the fate of the 17-acre estate.
